Dual study programme
This term is used to summarise various forms of combining study with practical work experience. The names of such study programmes vary due to their sometimes different concepts: In addition to ‘combined study and practice’, terms such as ‘work-integrated study programme’, ‘combined/integrated model’ or ‘cooperative study programme’ can be found.
Study options
Dual study programmes are offered by universities, universities of applied sciences, universities of cooperative education and vocational academies. Especially in economics, computer science, engineering and increasingly also in the social and healthcare sectors, universities of applied sciences and, in some cases, universities offer training-integrated, practice-integrated and part-time degree programmes.
Requirements
The following types can be distinguished:
- Training-integrated degree programmes, in which initial vocational training is usually also completed in a company (e.g. Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in combination with training as an electronics technician - industrial engineering).
- In cooperative or practice-integrating degree programmes, students conclude a contract with a company and gain in-depth practical experience alongside their studies.
- Career-integrating degree programmes incorporate the student's work experience into the academic training. In these cases, the aim is usually further qualification and the associated career advancement within the company.
A training-integrated degree programme always requires a completed training contract with a company. For practice-integrated degree programmes, you must sign a corresponding practice contract with a company before applying. And work-integrated degree programmes require an existing job. As with other degree programmes, university admission is also required. Exactly which one depends on the subject and type of university.
