Classical studies, archaeology

Classical studies and archaeology offer a scientific glimpse into the past. The focus is, for example, on cultural-historical research into Greco-Roman antiquity or the Near East.

Overview of the academic discipline

Ancient studies brings together elements from many different humanities. In this degree programme, you will study history, ancient languages and ancient literature, among other things. While classical antiquity scholars focus on Greco-Roman antiquity, there are also researchers who specialise in ancient Egypt or the Middle East, for example.

There are overlaps with archaeology, which is primarily interested in archaeological finds from peoples about whom we have no written sources. By examining material remains, archaeologists draw conclusions about their way of life and culture.

Which topics are included in the curriculum?

The exact course content depends on the choice of specialisation. As a rule, however, a broad overview of contemporary history, epochs and genres is taught. Practical skills in the areas of excavation techniques, conservation and restoration as well as museum work are also part of the programme.

What are the requirements?

A good basis for a successful degree programme in this field is knowledge of the following school subjects: History, English and French.

Most degree programmes have no admission restrictions or are subject to local selection procedures. Language skills, such as Latin or Ancient Greek, are often required. However, it is usually possible to catch up on these at the university.

What study programmes are there to choose from?

Subjects in the field of Classical Studies and Archaeology are mainly offered at universities, occasionally also at universities of applied sciences. The undergraduate degree programme ‘Classical Studies’ deals with Greek and Roman antiquity. However, with a degree programme such as ‘Ancient Near Eastern Studies’, you can also focus on a specific region.

Archaeology is often a component of Classical Studies, but can also be studied as an independent subject.

The knowledge acquired can be deepened or specified in a subsequent Master's degree programme.

What job opportunities are there after graduation?

Graduates of Classical Studies and Archaeology can find employment in exhibition management, archaeological excavations, adult education, cultural management or journalism.
