Overview of the academic discipline

The Arab-Islamic world, the African continent, the cultures of Asia - the field of study encompasses larger regions outside Europe in contrast to the small European languages and cultures. The individual disciplines have more in common in terms of methodology than content: they all deal with the language, culture, history and religion of the respective region.

Which topics are included in the curriculum?

The aim of these degree programmes is to acquire the ability to work independently as well as to gain extensive knowledge of culture, history and regional characteristics. As a rule, sound language training forms the basis for understanding this.

What are the requirements?

A good basis for successful studies in this field is knowledge of the following school subjects: English and French, German, history and politics/social studies.

What study programmes are there to choose from?

From African Studies to Indology and Turkish Studies: there are a wide variety of degree programmes on non-European languages and cultures at numerous universities in Germany - mostly as individual disciplines, but sometimes also as part of combined degree programmes.

What job opportunities are there after graduation?

Graduates find employment in academia, the diplomatic service and cultural exchange, as well as in the media and public authorities.
