Thinking and acting globally is just as strategically important for medium-sized companies as it is for multinational corporations. Specialists and managers who have in-depth knowledge of the global economic context are in demand.

Overview of the academic discipline

In addition to a broad business education, the degree programme provides in-depth knowledge of global business and intercultural skills. This includes specialist knowledge of the various global economic, legal and tax systems, with degree programmes in this area focusing on the international aspects of economics. They are usually offered without any particular specialisation.

Which topics are included in the curriculum?

The degree programme initially teaches the fundamentals of economics. This includes modules in areas such as general business administration, accounting, controlling, marketing and sales as well as the quantitative methods of economics such as statistics and mathematics.

Students are prepared for the special features of the international business world in courses such as International Accounting, International Finance, International Economics and International Business Law.

Courses taught in foreign languages, integrated semesters abroad or international internship phases are usually integral parts of the programme. Students also acquire or improve their foreign language skills.

What are the requirements?

A good basis for successful studies in this area is knowledge of the following school subjects, depending on the chosen degree programme: Maths and economics/law. Due to the internationalisation of the economy, foreign languages are also required. A command of English, the most important business language, is essential and may be a criterion for admission to the university. Depending on the degree programme, some courses are also held in English. Knowledge of French or Spanish or other business languages may also be important.

What study programmes are there to choose from?

The degree programmes in this field of study are mainly offered at universities of applied sciences, but also at some universities. Possible degree programme titles are ‘International Business Administration’, ‘European Business Administration’, ‘International Business and Economics’ or ‘International Management’. The language of instruction is often English.

At some universities, a double degree can be obtained in co-operation with foreign partner universities.

What job opportunities are there after graduation?

Graduates can find employment in the private sector, for example in finance and accounting, marketing, advertising, management or corporate management.
